ISAC 2019 Chuseok Special: Winners And Highlights (Part 1)

On September 12, the first part of 2019 Idol Star Athletics Championship – Chuseok Special aired on MBC. Today’s episode included the finals of the individual male/female 60-meter races and men’s ssierum. In addition, we saw archery male/female semi-finals, the first round of the new e-sports event and a part of the spacing out event. Finally, the preliminaries for the 4 × 400 meters relay, both men’s and women’s races, were aired today.

This year, ISAC celebrates its 10th anniversary, so the hosts would occasionally remind the viewers of some idols who have left a big mark as athletes in this competition; for example, BtoB’s Minhyuk and Dal Shabet’s Gaeun. All ISAC participants, as well as the MCs (including TWICE’s Dahyun), wore special silver rings in support of “children’s hopes and dreams”. Before moving on to the actual events, all participants had to take the athletes’ pledge, which was read out by idol representatives: NCT 127’s Mark and ITZY’s Yeji.

The opening ceremony also included a fun performance by the duo UV, who were joined by the actor Song Jinwoo and Pentagon’s Kino! After this fun intro, it was time for the first event of the day.

Women’s 60m race

After three preliminary rounds, six different girl group members ran the final. The favorites to win were Dreamcatcher’s Yoohyeon, Cosmic Girls’ (WJSN’s) Yeoreum. and Cherry Bullet’s Jiwon – since each of them came in first in previous rounds. However, there was a twist in the end, as you can see from the final ranking below!

  1. Yeonjung (Holics)
  2. Yeoreum (WJSN)
  3. Yves (LOONA)
  4. Jiwon (Cherry Bullet)
  5. Lena (GWSN)
  6. Yoohyeon (Dreamcatcher)
Men’s 60m race

It was a tough competition for the boys, but Golden Child’s Lee Jangjun and Stray Kids’ Bang Chan looked the strongest going into the finals. Even so, once again a dark horse won the race:

  1. Hwalchan (GreatGuys)
  2. Nam Yunsung (Noir)
  3. Lee Jangjun (Golden Child)
  4. Jeon Woong (AB6IX)
  5. Bang Chan (Stray Kids)
  6. Y (Golden Child)
Men’s ssireum

The infamous but very entertaining Korean wrestling was back on the Chuseok special of ISAC! Six boy groups competed for first place and the Hanwoo set prize.

In the first quarter-final round, Golden Child quickly beat 1THE9, while SF9 had the daunting task to go against ASTRO, who ultimately won.

The second quarter-finals included a close fight between VERIVERY and ONF, where the latter came out as victorious. On the other hand, AB6IX surprised everyone – including themselves, probably – by easily beating CIX in just two rounds.

Semi-finals were intense, but both ASTRO and AB6IX managed to win against Golden Child and ONF, respectively, after only two rounds. And then it was time for the final confrontation between the favorites ASTRO and surprising rookies AB6IX!

Firstly, Youngmin won against ASTRO’s JinJin, after which AB6IX’s leader dropped to the floor exhausted. Then Donghyun lost against Rocky, making the score 1:1. In the end, it was up to AB6IX’s Jeon Woong and ASTRO’s Moonbin to win for their team. The last round was pretty comical, as Moonbin – who is quite taller than Woong in the first place – lifted his AB6IX opponent and dropped him onto the mat in a matter of seconds.

Poor Woong was completely embarrassed, and his fellow members later used their bodies to block him from cameras’ view and more “humiliation”. We hope Woong didn’t feel too bad; at least he made us all laugh!

Congratulations to both AB6IX and the winners ASTRO!

Archery (women)

The four girl groups who made it to the archery semi-finals were Oh My Girl, Cosmic Girls (WJSN), Lovelyz, and TWICE. The special idol MC for this event was Oh My Girl’s Seunghee.

In the first round, we saw Oh My Girl’s Mimi, Hyojung, and Binnie going against WJSN’s Eunseo, Exy, and Dayoung. The two teams struggled a bit, as both Exy and Binnie missed the target completely at one point, i.e. they got 0 points. This was especially frustrating for Oh My Girl’s Seunghee, who was watching her fellow members from the commentator stand. Finally, WJSN progressed to the finals by winning with the score of 74 to 66. Eunseo proved to be the ace because she was the only one from both groups who scored a 10.

The second round between TWICE and Lovelyz was a bit closer. Of course, we have to mention the grand entrance of TWICE’s “School Meal Club” to the tune of “Fancy”, with the trio dressed in cool all-black Hunger Games inspired outfits!

Lovelyz’ Kei was much better than Dahyun in the first round. TWICE’s Chaeyoung, on the other hand, almost put her team in the lead, as she looked like a more accurate shooter than Mijoo, but failed to do so after scoring a 4. The final battle was between both groups’ ace maknaes Tzuyu and Yejin. Unfortunately for TWICE, not even Tzuyu’s skills could turn the game around for them, so they lost to Lovelyz with the score of 77 to 79. Here is a short clip of the maknae showdown!

Stay tuned for the finals between Cosmic Girls and Lovelyz tomorrow!

Archery (men)

THE BOYZ, Stray Kids, PENTAGON, and NCT 127 had us on the edge of our seats with their evened out archery skills! Take a look at their cute selfies first and scroll down for the results of these two semi-finals.

  • Semi-finals 1: Stray Kids vs. THE BOYZ –> 87 to 85
  • Semi-finals 2: PENTAGON vs. NCT 127 –> 84 to 85

NCT’s Mark was the biggest cutie once again with his inability to wink. Despite this, he scored 7, 9, 9, leading MC Jun Hyunmoo to comment: “Isn’t he a genius if he shoots like that with both eyes closed?” And the answer is yes; Mark is absolutely fully capable.

Look forward to the grand final tomorrow, featuring JYP’s Stray Kids and SM’s NCT 127!

Spacing out

We still don’t know the winners of this event, but it definitely looks like a lot of fun! The participants are supposed to remain calm and impassive no matter what happens. And the distractions included comedians trying to make them laugh, spraying water on their faces, etc. The final four – including Stray Kids’ Jisung – even had to put huge ice cubes in their mouths and let them melt without changing their expressions.

All in all, it looked hilarious! Check out some photos and a video below.

E-sports (PUBG)

The participants who competed in this year’s new e-sports event had to play the survival shooting game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). The first round that aired today was an individual game, so despite the fact that many idols came with their groups (for example, Momoland and NCT DREAM), there was only one winner. The special MCs for this event were well-known idol gamers: FT Island’s Lee Hongki and Apink’s Oh Hayoung.

The four members of NCT DREAM shocked everyone when they did the ultimate teamkill; first Jaemin shot Jisung, followed by Chenle getting rid of Renjun. One of the MCs then said: “NCT DREAM only kill NCT DREAM!” So, Jaemin was the only Dreamie left, but he was killed by SF9’s Dawon later in the game. Dawon was actually a big favorite, getting rid of the competition left and right. And a special shout-out to (G)-IDLE’s Yuqi who proved to be a boss in this game!

Finally, the last two standing were SF9’s Dawon and VAV’s Lou, who was the overall winner and the one to receive a fancy gold medal. Congrats!
