Original article

On September 13, MBC aired the second part of the 2019 Idol Star Athletics Championship – Chuseok Special. Today’s episode included the archery finals, pitching, women’s ssireum, the e-sports group competition, penalty shoot-outs, the final 400-meters relay race, and a first look at horseback riding.

Unfortunately, certain events were excluded in today’s broadcast. These are: women’s archery finals, the conclusion of the spacing out event, the semi-finals and finals of penalty shoot-outs, and the full equestrianism event. TheStandom will update this article once more information becomes available.

Women’s ssireum

We saw eight girl group teams competing in Korean wrestling today:

  • WJSN (Exy, Eunseo, Yeonjung) vs. Weki Meki (Rina, Yoojung, Sooyeon)
  • fromis_9 (Saerom, Chaeyoung, Hayoung) vs. Dreamcatcher (Siyeon, JiU, Gahyeon)
  • ITZY (Chaeryeong, Ryujin, Lia) vs. LOONA (Heejin, Hyunjin, Yeojin)
  • MOMOLAND (Nancy, JooE, Nayun) vs. Cherry Bullet (Chaerin, Mirae, Remi)
Semi-final 1

Cosmic Girls (WJSN) went head to head with fromis_9. After the second round, it seemed that fromis_9 had won because Chaeyoung beat Yeonjung, but it turned out that Chaeyoung’s knee touched the mat before Yeonjung went down, so the score was 1 to 1. WJSN’s ace player Eunseo was relieved because now she could compete for the win. Earlier, Eunseo knocked down Weki Meki’s Yoojung in just 1.65 seconds! Finally, Eunseo beat fromis_9’s Hayoung as well, leading her team to the finals.

Semi-final 2

It was a rookie showdown: ITZY vs. Cherry Bullet! ITZY won their quarter-final round after an intense battle between Ryujin and LOONA’s Hyunjin; the girls timed out twice because they were so equally matched, so the judges had to weigh them and ultimately gave the win to Ryujin because she was lighter than her opponent. In the semi-finals, however, Ryujin lost against Cherry Bullet’s Mirae, and since Chaeryeong previously beat Chaerin, it was all up to ITZY’s Lia and Cherry Bullet’s Remi. Unfortunately, Lia lost because her knee just dropped to the mat (for barely any reason LOL), so Cherry Bullet progressed to the finals.

The rookie group Cherry Bullet came face to face with intimidating Cosmic Girls (their member Eunseo, to be more precise). The final battle was over after only two rounds, as Yeonjung and Eunseo both won against Chaerin and Mirae. Therefore, WJSN were crowned winners and received Hanwoo beef as their prize. Eunseo was also carried around for a victory lap, and we must say she definitely deserved it!

The participants of the first-ever ISAC horseback riding event were:

  • Zuho (SF9)
  • Ju Haknyeon (THE BOYZ)
  • Dayoung (WJSN)
  • Arang (PinkFantasy)
  • Hyebin (MOMOLAND)
  • Park Jiwon (fromis_9)
  • Siha (Noir)
  • Kenta (JBJ95).

So far, we have only seen Ju Haknyeon and Zuho compete against each other in a timed event that evaluated their skills in leading and riding a horse. THE BOYZ’ Ju Haknyeon progressed to the next round.

Archery (men) finals

This was the confrontation between SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment, as NCT 127’s Mark, Doyoung, and Johnny competed against Stray Kids’ Lee Know, Felix, and Hyunjin. It was a tight match, but NCT 127 absolutely shined! All three members scored nothing but 9s and 10s (except for Johnny in the last round) and ultimately won with the score of 93 to 90. Congratulations to NCT 127 and Stray Kids, who did great as well!

After receiving their medals, Johnny, Doyoung, and Mark immediately went to celebrate with the fans. They handed out sandwiches to NCTzens and showed off their gold medals. Such a cute moment!

Penalty shoot-outs

This was a boys-only event held on an outdoor football pitch. The special idol MC was WJSN’s Soobin, who was joined (among others) by Kim Byungji, a former goalkeeper for the South Korea national football team. This event brought us another battle between Stray Kids and NCT 127… And here are the results:

  • THE BOYZ vs. Golden Child (1:3)
  • ASTRO vs. 1THE9 (3:0)
  • SF9 vs. Pentagon (4:5)
  • Stray Kids vs. NCT 127 (3:4)

The Pentagon vs. SF9 match was definitely the most thrilling, as both teams had to take nine shots (18 in total) because they kept coming to a draw. Overall, the star players were Pentagon’s Hui and NCT 127’s Yuta!

For the first time in ISAC history, girl group members got to show how well they can pitch a baseball. Each of the eight participants had to pitch to a catcher from a 12 meters distance, and they were judged by five baseball professionals, who then gave them scores from 1 to 10. Here are the female idols who participated in this event:

  • Lena (GWSN)
  • Johyun (Berry Good)
  • Heejin (LOONA)
  • Jiwon (Cherry Bullet)
  • Yeji (ITZY)
  • Doyeon (Weki Meki)
  • Wonyoung (IZ*ONE)
  • Seulgi (Red Velvet).

After all of the girls had their turn, there was a three-way tie between Johyun, Jiwon, and Yeji, who all got a perfect score, i.e. 50 points. Ultimately, it was Cherry Bullet’s Jiwon who threw what was described as a perfect pitch, so she got first place and the Hanwoo set prize. However, ITZY’s Yeji was named MVP since she threw the fastest pitch, that reached a speed of 68 km/h! Kudos to both of them.

E-sports (PUBG)

After yesterday’s individual battle, the viewers got to enjoy their favorite idols playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in groups this time. It was a chaotic showdown between various boy group and girl group teams, as well as the MBC announcers team.

The members of LOONA were on fire, eliminating two boy groups at one point! However, they didn’t make it till the end. The DIA girls were also doing well until they came across absolute stars of PUBG: Renjun, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung of NCT DREAM.

Dreamies ultimately won gold medals, after killing TREI’s Jaejun and becoming the last ones standing in the game. Their ace player then thanked the fans in the audience:

As expected, because Czennies gave us support, that’s why we could win. I’m really thankful.

Congratulations to NCT DREAM, whose We Boom album was officially certified platinum by Gaon yesterday! Moreover, they are the only K-pop group who made it onto Billboard’s 21 Under 21 list. In other words, these boys are winners in all fields.

The 4 × 400m relay

The women’s and men’s finals aired in today’s episode. Here are the final rankings:

  1. WJSN
  2. IZ*ONE
  3. Dreamcatcher
  1. Golden Child
  3. ASTRO
  4. Stray Kids.

It was a tight race for the boys, up to the final turn when Golden Child finally pulled ahead of THE BOYZ and won the gold! On the other hand, WJSN have officially dominated ISAC 2019, as they won a total of four medals! Congratulations to all.
