The dust from the Teen Choice Awards hasn’t even settled yet and we are already getting ready for another awards show. In just under two weeks, on August 26, MTV Video Music Awards are going to be held at the Prudential Center in Newark.
As we have seen in the past few years, no major music awards show can go without some K-pop, but this is the first time that a special category was created just for K-pop – at the last VMAs there was no K-pop category.
Some fans, especially ARMY, have voiced their not-so-great opinion on this quite vocally. They raised an important question. Why is there a special K-pop category? A pop category already exists. Why is everyone focused more on the K than pop in K-pop? We at TheStandom like to keep things positive, so we won’t make any kinds of bold claims like the ones you can see on Twitter, we’re just giving you some food for thought.
The nominees in this controversial new category are the following: BTS for “Boy With Luv”, Blackpink for “Kill This Love”, Monsta X for “Who Do You Love” (look at all the LOVE, awww), Tomorrow x Together for “Cat and Dog”, NCT 127 for “Regular”, and finally EXO for “Tempo”.
BTS are nominated in additional three categories: Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, and Best Choreography.
What do you think about this controversy? Is it necessary? Let us know down below, but remember – no bashing any of the artists we have mentioned, and this includes their fandoms!
