Today, October 24, we celebrate ATEEZ’ first anniversary!
Exactly one year ago, the “eight makes one” team debuted with their first mini album TREASURE EP.1 : All To Zero – that reached No. 7 on the Gaon album chart – and its two title tracks: “Treasure” and “Pirate King”.
Previously known as KQ Fellaz, Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho captivated K-pop fans from the very beginning with their powerful performance, rapping skills, as well as strong and stable live vocals. Their debut stage took place on Mnet’s M Countdown on October 25, 2018, and the boys have been impressing us ever since.
The group’s first EP debuted on Billboard World Albums on November 3 and they were subsequently included in Billboard’s “10 Best New K-Pop Acts of 2018” list.
ATEEZ kept up the momentum with the release of their second mini album TREASURE EP.2 : Zero To One on January 15, 2019, along with a music video for the title track “Say My Name”. Thus, the iconic “driving dance” was born!
The group’s second EP reached No. 6 on Gaon and solidified their status as a K-pop rookie to watch by hitting No. 5 on Billboard’s World Albums as well as No. 7 on Heatseekers Albums (a chart that rarely includes K-pop artists). “Say My Name” was also their first song to enter Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart, debuting at No. 21.
However, that was not all. On February 7, ATEEZ released a performance video for Track 1 of the second EP – “HALA HALA” – and it’s safe to say nothing was ever the same again. Is it surprising that so many new ATINYs were born during this era? We believe this amazing performance speaks for itself.
As a result of their immense global popularity, these monster rookies announced the U.S. dates for their first world tour “The Expedition Tour” on January 24, just three months after debut! ATEEZ went to five cities in the United States in March, followed by 15 European stops the next month, with every single one of their shows being completely sold out. During their time in Europe in April, the group also made their debut on Billboard’s Social 50 chart, which was until then reserved only for K-pop giants like EXO, BTS, and BLACKPINK.
On May 20, they released their fifth MV, this time for the final track from Zero To One: “Promise”. This is one of ATEEZ’ underrated music videos, so we’ll leave it below for you to check out. It was filmed in Moscow, during the time the group spent in Russia as part of “The Expedition Tour in Europe”.
There was no stopping for ATEEZ, however, as they also attended their very first KCON in Chiba, Japan, that same month. You can watch that stunning KCON debut on the link.
On June 10, ATEEZ released their third mini album TREASURE EP.3 : One To All, going back to the double title track by dropping MVs for “Wave” and “Illusion” the same day. They made history by actually letting fans choose their lead single, and the majority voted for “Wave”.
ATINY not only made the right choice, but also got ATEEZ their first music show win with “Wave” on the June 20 episode of Mnet’s M Countdown! This video of the boys’ reactions after being announced as winners still makes us emotional…
“Wave”, with its catchy Hakuna Matata ya chorus, won ATEEZ their second trophy on SBS MTV’s The Show just five days later. In addition, the EP reached a new peak on Gaon Album Chart (No. 2) and Billboard World Albums, where it debuted at No. 8 with the group’s best U.S. sales up to that point. Both “Wave” and “Illusion” charted on World Digital Songs Sales as well.
ATEEZ were on fire early in their career!
In July, the group performed at KCON 2019 NY and released the music video for Track 5 from their third EP: “Aurora”. This song holds a special place in ATEEZ’ and ATINY’s hearts because it was written, composed, and produced by leader Hongjoong.
On July 24, just nine months after their debut, ATEEZ signed with RCA Records, an American record label that also represents stars like Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Childish Gambino, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Shakira, and Zayn.
In August, it was time for the Australian leg of “The Expedition Tour”, with the boys performing in Melbourne and Sydney before heading back to the States for KCON LA. ATEEZ performed at KCON Rookies, the main concert, and the KCON afterparty.
During this period, they also did a lot of press in the U.S., gaining more exposure. For instance, even Ellen DeGeneres now knows who ATEEZ are (see our article for more)!
On August 20, ATEEZ won their first major award at the 2019 Soribada Best K-Music Awards and soon afterwards they started gearing up for another comeback. In the midst of comeback preparations, the boys also performed at their third KCON this year: KCON Thailand on September 29.
After a couple of weeks of teasers, ATEEZ finally released their first full-length album and the conclusion of the TREASURE series – TREASURE EP.FIN : All To Action – on October 8. The 11-track LP topped iTunes charts in 13 countries, including the United States (source), peaked at No. 7 on Billboard’s World Albums, and is currently reigning over the Gaon Album Chart.
The music video for the latest title track “WONDERLAND” has surpassed 20 million views on YouTube in just two weeks, and the song is currently No. 6 on World Digital Song Sales, which is also a new Billboard peak for the group! We’re still waiting for that third music show win, though…
All in all, this has been an eventful year for ATEEZ, to say the least. The boys have proven to be a force to be reckoned with and we cannot wait to see what the future brings.
Happy one year with ATEEZ, everyone, just look how far they’ve come!
Don’t forget to tune into the group’s first anniversary fan meeting which will be broadcast on V LIVE later today. More on that here.
